Liner notes of the album:
This album is another attempt to claim ownership of the musical moments hidden within the dusty grooves of vinyl.
I'm searching for those places that Kool Herc found in James Brown and Christian Marclay found in crackles and stickers loops. I'm picking up where Grandmaster Flash and DJ Radar left off with their innovation through the use of technology. In order to reflect on a recorded past that can only cut through the now, the now now, I have created digital tools that stutter the record's linearity. The scratch, the mix, the juggling, and the noise are all techniques of rupture in our listening consciousness - I hope my tools and expression provide another vocabulary for this musical language.
On an instrument that obscures the notion of play and playback more than any other, my goal has been to find my own path to what Max Roach and Takeo Moriyama found in their instruments. The best way I know how to show respect to my musical influences is not to interpret or to sample their music, but rather to embody their playing, their innovation and their spirit through the play-back of their music.
I dedicate this album to Michel Waisvisz and to everything that STEIM, Studio for Electro Instrumental Music, represents. Without their influence and support my music today wouldn't be possible.
